copy machines and urban farming.

it's been over a week, guess i'd better check in. this morning i woke up earlier than i had set my alarm for, not sure why. but it turns out that it was a good thing i did. i got a phone call bright and early from the copy machine repairman. i quickly got dressed and ran out the door, cereal bowl of granola, soymilk, and strawberries in hand, and walked up to the church to let him in. he had nothing new to tell me, the side door of the copier has been broken for years. it's either tape the door shut and hope for the best, or order a new one for $100. i once again opted to tape the door up and he offered to find me a used one at no cost. excellent.

while he worked on the copier, i worked on my painting project in the sanctuary. i'm painting the back of an old chalkboard so that we can use it as a bulletin board. i love being in the sanctuary. it's so quiet and peaceful. i prefer to work on stuff in there when i can. i use the laptop and sit on the floor in the front corner in order to be close enough to get a wireless connection. on sunny days the dome always looks beautiful. i've been rather pensive lately, so my few minutes of peace in the sanctuary gave me some time to think. we had the funeral for a friend of the church this week. david, our faithful custodian, died on sunday after battling cancer for several months. since i am often at the church working, i would run into him several times a week. he always stopped his work to talk to me and ask how things were going. i am sad, but i am joyful at the same time when i think about his death. i can't decide if i just haven't processed this fully yet, or if i really am at peace with it. david left peacefully. his words to the pastor on friday were "make it joyful". he had such a strong faith. he left the earth reassuring the rest of us that he was at peace and that he was going to a better place. we will miss him, but for me i can't help but feel a little excitement. he is WITH JESUS. i don't know if i ever really fully understood just how exciting that is before. it makes me want to skip and sing. rest in peace david, your work here is done.

in other news, still no news from the science center. EVERYONE is asking and i've got nothing to report. i'm trying not to dwell on yet another opportunity going by without me and focus on finding something new. as "luck" would have it i stopped by the library last monday and picked up a flyer for a talk on urban farming. i went and was inspired (again) to check into it. a woman from Boston spoke about the program they run in the city. they have 4 gardens, one in a suburban area, one on top of one of the hospitals in boston, and two in an innercity neighborhood. they hire kids for the summer from urban and suburban neighborhoods and put them on teams together to work on the farm, sell the produce at a farmer's market, and do youth leadership training. i was so inspired by her and the work that this organization does. hearing about this is like hearing that all of my favorite things are combined into one: my love for the city, my love for creation and environmental causes, working with social justice issues like poverty, hunger, homelessness, working with kids. it's all rolled into one. that's right folks. i think i finally figured out what i want to be when i grown up: an urban farmer! no, i will not ever wear overalls for any reason. (perhaps my bright pink rubber boots though). now, to figure out who to get involved with here in my city and how to get them to pay me enough to survive. that is the key. in the meantime i'll wait on cranky customers at the store and make church bulletins until i want to scream. i'll be writing letters to people about getting involved with the urban farming initiative real soon. now i am off to go file my taxes for the state and local governments and then purchase a paper cutter and some green paper for the church.
