a swift kick in the pants

on a more serious note i went to see The Pursuit of Happyness tonight with dave and julie. dave was asking before the movie started if i was going to cry. i told him no but i was very wrong. i cried my eyes out. not because i'm sappy and i cry at lots of movies but because all i could think about were the families that i knew in atlanta who were living in the shelter at my church. sure everyone thinks that it's sad that people are homeless and i'm sure they think about helping them at least once in a while, but the idea of someone being homeless wasn't real to me until i knew families that were. mothers and fathers and babies and teenagers all trying to get by, fighting to stay together, to find jobs, to feed their kids, to keep their babies safe. gosh, it seems like not that long ago that i sat in the shelter playing cards with john or took walks with emma or tickled her five year old son kevian. these people remain etched in my memory. i hope i don't forget them because they are the ones who just might push me to move from my comfortable life (despite my mumblings and grumblings about job/money issues....at least i have a home, and food, and the security of knowing that even if i didn't have anything i'd still have somewhere to go home to) and DO something. there must be a reason that God gave me a heart that breaks when i see people hurting. it's so easy to talk the talk. i need to start walking the walk. i need to find a way to serve God and do His work in a more concrete way than having great customer service skills while i'm working at the store. i want a job that has purpose and meaning and that requires at least a small amount of passion for something.

on a less serious note it was great to see dave and julie again. i wish i could have spent more time with them, but alas not this time. thanks for the peppermint mocha frappaccino guys.

you're welcome.

melissa, i've been thinking the same things... the whole serve god by working hard at your regular job thing... i go back and forth. i think when god takes us out of our lives to be joined to him it's a total transformation where all of our energies should be redirected to serving him, concretely, doing the ministry that jesus can't do physically because he's not on earth anymore; but we are, we're his body, his hands feet, etc. and we're to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal and proclaim release to the captives... customer service skills my ass. i don't want to be an english teacher for christ; i want to be a radical lover of the downcast for christ. may god give both of us the needed escape velocity to do it.
