today on the bus this little old man was struggling to get off the bus at my stop. so i stopped and asked him if he needed some help. i carried his groceries off the bus and stopped to talk to him a minute. he introduced himself and thanked me for helping him. he then proceeded to ask me if i lived in the neighborhood and ask if i was in school. i told him yes i live in the neighborhood, no i'm just working. he thanked me again and said maybe he'd see me around. after telling him to have a good day i started to walk away. i looked back and realized he was still struggling quite a bit with the groceries and his cane. so i went back and asked him where he was headed. he said he just needed to get across the street to the other bus stop so that he could catch a bus to his apartment, which he proceeded to point to. it was only a block away! poor guy, hobbling so badly that he couldn't walk a block to his home. so i carried his groceries across the street to the bus shelter for him. on the way there the conversation went like this (his name was donald):
donald: so what are your hobbies? you ever play any bingo?
me: actually i've played some bingo back in catholic school. we used to play in the church basement
donald: oh really! that's where i'm headed tonight! St. Something's to the basement for some bingo. i sit in the non-smoking section. i'll be there about 7pm. it's windy out, i ain't got nothing else to do. i figure i'll go play me some bingo. now i'm not tryin' to be fresh or anything. i'm an old man. you're young. i don't mean no harm in asking. i like you as a friend, nothin' more. i ain't trying to take advantage and i don't want nothin' but a friend. if you'd like you can join me for some bingo tonight.
me: alright donald, thanks for the invitation, i'll keep that in mind.
donald then proceeded to give me directions on taking the bus to bingo. and reminding me at least 7 times where it was located.
donald: you smoke?
me: no
donald: i didn't think so. me either. you'll find me in the non-smoking section if you decide to show.
me: ok, thanks
donald: now i'll tell you what. you show up tonight and it's on me. i'll buy you some bingo cards. we'll play some bingo but if you hit the jackpot you just remember who bought those cards. we'll split the winnings 50/50.
me: i've got a few things to do tonight donald, but i'll keep that in mind. thanks for the invitiation. you have a good day!
donald: alright then you have a great day! thanks for your help!
ahahaha. awww. an old man asked me to play bingo with him, just when i feared my social life was dwindling.
and to top it off while i was walking away still laughing to myself that an old man just asked me out for bingo a school bus honks it's horn, screeches on the brakes and comes to a dead halt beside me. the door opens up and a guy from church who drives bus shouts "HEY! Need a ride?!" I burst out laughing and said "Very FUNNY!" He threw back his head and laughed and all of his elementary school students busted out laughing and they drove off just as suddenly. Man, it was an amusing walk home.
